Updates To YouTube’s Copyright Dispute Process And How Your Digital Agency Could Be Affected

Digital Agency

If your digital agency is one that helps clients with their YouTube content and management, it’s entirely likely that you’ve been exposed to youTube’s copyright system and the dispute and appeal process. In the past, the copyright and appeal process could be frustrating, especially in cases where a copyright strike was issued as part of a false claim. Recently, however, YouTube took to Creator Insider to talk about the improvements that will be made to the appeals process. With these changes, the experience of dealing with false copyright claims against your digital agency’s clients will be improved considerably.

How Do Copyright Claims Affect Your Clients?

Copyright claims are commonly known as Content ID claims. YouTube takes copyright very seriously and goes out of its way to ensure that no one is able to profit off of content they do not actually own. A copyright claim against your client’s content means that YouTube has identified the content as belonging to someone else. While copyright claims won’t cause any adverse effects on your client’s channel, it can mean that someone else can claim revenue on the video, place ads, or even restrict the video in some regions or countries.

YouTube’s Dispute Process For Copyright Claims

When content has been claimed, it can be disputed if the uploader believes they have the right to use the video content. The claimant will be alerted to the dispute and will have 30 days to decide whether they will dismiss the claim or move forward with it. Without a response, the claim will automatically be released. If rejected, an appeal can be filed, and the claimant has a further 30 days to review the appeal. YouTube won’t get involved in copyright disputes unless a takedown request is submitted. If YouTube decides the claim is valid, the content video will be taken down, and a strike will be issued against the channel. If ownership is successfully proven, the video will be reinstated. This process can be lengthy, taking several months to be resolved.

How YouTube’s Copyright Dispute Process Will Be Changing

YouTube will be making two major changes to improve the process:

  • The time to review copyright appeals will be shortened to 7 days. While claimants still have 30 days to review the first dispute, the appeal period will be just a week.
  • YouTube is adding the option to escalate to appeal. The effects of false claims blocking viewers from seeing a video can be negated with the option to go straight to the appeals process by skipping over the initial dispute.
