Instagram remains one of the most popular social media platforms in the world, with more than one billion daily active users as of 2022. Part of Instagram’s popularity is due to its fluid evolution, starting out as just an app for sharing pictures and becoming a titan in the social media space, which is a daily habit for many users and a crucial tool for most digital marketing agencies. In this article, Globital South Africa shares how Instagram is even more valuable to digital marketers with its recent updates.
Who Uses Instagram?
Instagram has a wide user base made up of people representing a wide range of ages, genders, ethnicities and more. In 2022, Hootsuite released its Global State of Digital Report, including the following statistics regarding Instagram users:
- The most common age range on Instagram is 25-34 years old at 31.5%. Second is 18-24 at 30.1% followed by users 35-44 at 16.1%. Users aged 13-17, 45-54, 55-64 and 65+ represented 8.5%, 8%, 3.6% and 2.1%, respectively.
- The gender of Instagram users was almost even at 50.7% male and 49.3% female. This statistic fails to report how many Instagram users identify outside of the male/female binary genders.
- The top three most popular countries and territories with the largest Instagram audiences are India (230 million users), the U.S. (159.7 million users) and Brazil (119.4 million users). South Africa comes in at number 15 with 20.6 million users.
These statistics show that Instagram is more than a social media platform. It has the potential to reach just about any target audience and, when used correctly, is a powerful tool digital marketers can use to connect their clients with their customers.
Instagram Introduces Ads To Profile Feeds
Instagram has already featured ads in the Stories and Reels tabs and is introducing advertising opportunities to the Profile and Explore sections. Public Instagram accounts with users over the age of 18 will now be shown ads as they scroll through their feeds. As of now, only selected creators will have the opportunity to earn revenue from these ads, but this could change in the future after testing.
For digital agencies, this means two additional opportunities to help their clients. First, it’s yet another opportunity to advertise to their customer’s target audience, boosting brand awareness. Second, it has the potential to become an additional revenue stream once monetisation opens up.
With Instagram being such a popular platform with a diverse range of users from various demographics, it should be a key part of your clients’ social media strategies. As a digital agency, you already know how time-consuming effective social media management can be with content creation, uploading, managing profiles, responding to comments, research, keeping up with algorithm and platform changes and more. For social media to be an effective marketing tool, consistency is key.
