Since its launch as a photo-sharing app in 2010, Instagram has steadily added more tools and features, making it one of the most popular social media platforms in the world. As of April 2022, Instagram had approximately one billion monthly active users. Instagram is not only popular amongst casual users. It has become an essential marketing tool for digital agencies. According to Statista, Instagram is the most popular social media platform after Facebook, with almost 80% of marketers including the feature prominently in their advertising strategies.
As a white label social media reseller, Globital Australia works in partnership with digital agencies that find themselves in need of outsourcing social media posts and campaigns for their clients. As such, we keep a close eye on the big players in media, especially when it comes to any major changes or updates. As of early June 2022, Instagram has updated its Sensitive Content Control feature, increasing the control users have over controlling their Instagram experience.
What Is The Sensitive Content Control Feature?
Instagram first launched the Sensitive Content Control feature in July 2021 with the aim of giving users the ability to “shape Instagram into the experience that they want.” With the understanding that different people find different levels of content acceptable, appropriate or desirable, Instagram created the Sensitive Content Control tool to allow users to choose for themselves how much sensitive content would show up in the Explore section. The Sensitive Content Controls can be accessed through the settings menu, selecting Account and then selecting Sensitive Content Control. Here, users can decide whether they are happy with the default settings (Standard), to see less sensitive content (Less) or to see more sensitive content (More). Users under 18 won’t have the ability to choose “More” of this type of content.

What Do The Updates Entail?
Following the success of the Sensitive Content Controls for the Explore section of Instagram, the feature now extends to the Search, Reels, Hashtag, In-Feed Recommendations, and Accounts You Might Follow sections of the app. Essentially, the control users have had over their Explore section now extends to the whole platform. The technology Instagram uses to enforce its Recommendation Guidelines will also apply to any recommendations Instagram gives on the Search and Hashtag pages.
These updates could affect the numbers and engagement digital agencies see on their client’s social media profiles. If their content is geared towards a more adult audience, it’s entirely possible that sensitive content controls may keep users away from their content. This is not necessarily a bad thing, however. By filtering out users who are outside of your client’s target audience, their content is more likely to reach people who are more open to engaging with the brand.
